Hello and Welcome
Joe Somers, President, Abu Dhabi Irish Society, March 2006
Hello and welcome again to the second edition of "Green News" - the newsletter for the Abu Dhabi Irish Society.
Well it’s that time of year again and the countdown to St Patrick’s has commenced. We have quite a line up for you over with a full week of festivities.
Aside from the Ball itself the big news has to be the attendance of Mrs. Mary Robinson at a breakfast which will be held on the 13th March. All Society members will have gotten an invitation to this momentous event but in case you haven’t please contact Sean Farrell.
To
give you an idea of what you can expect for the ball, we have an Irish dancer
who is front line in Lord of the Dance, an excellent live band flown in from
Ireland, traditional Irish music and a seven course gourmet dinner created by
award winning Irish Chef, Derek Flynn. There will be a raffle with some top
prizes and also table and door prizes. The box office is open from 7pm – 9pm on
Sunday 05th March in the lobby of the Crowne Plaza.
On another note, we now have an Irish teacher available to members of the society. If you are interested then please e-mail me. For more information about this very old yet vibrant and active language, see this Wikipedia entry.
And don’t forget to check out our website for all the upcoming events, reports and general information.
I look forward to seeing you all at the various events.
Joe Somers, President Irish Society

Siobhan Farrell will be the administrator for the classes and following last Saturday’s registrations, the classes are filling up quite quickly. As spaces are limited I would urge you, if interested to contact Siobhan as soon as possible on Abu Dhabi-6325626. Timings for the class are Saturdays from 4-30 to 6.
Tá an Múinteoir Anseo!
We have found an Irish Teacher to teach adults and children the basics of the first national language. Contact Joe Somers.
GAA News
Our friends, An Fianna, have a regular program of sporting and social activities. Give dbrady@hct.ac.ae a shout, or call John Rea at 050 596 9601
Friends Of Galle
Among other charities, the Abu Dhabi Irish Society is a supporter of the great work of the Friends of Galle, helping Sri Lanka recover after the tsunami. If you would like to help, call Lisa at mobile 443 8467.
Membership
They say that a society is only as successful as the members, well I say it anyway, and we need more. So whether you are only new in Abu Dhabi or a long time resident I urge you to join. Do you know someone who has just arrived and would like to get on the social scene or perhaps someone who has been here for years and might not be aware that we exist? Even persons with no ties to Ireland but have expressed an interest in all things Irish can join as an associate member.
I have membership forms, which I can send by e-mail to any interested party. Just drop me a line to joesomers@irishsocietyabudhabi.com and I will forward the forms on.
