How to Upload Photos
There are two ways to get photos onto the site.
- Upload them yourself on our Photo Gallery. See example here.
- Send us a CD with your pictures and captions made in Picasa. See example here.
Coppermine Photo Gallery
- Go to the page here (opens a new window).
- If you haven't done so already register. It takes seconds. You will have to give a valid email address, and an approval link will be sent to your email.
- In your email click on the link.
- Go back to the page and login with your name and password.
- Create an album (or two, or three!). Give them useful names so that people will know what's inside.
- Upload your photos. Currently you can upload up to 6 Mb of photos - enough for about 100 reasonable quality sized images at 60kb each.
- Give each photo a caption and title. Logout
Make a CD with Picasa
On your computer, download Picasa, brilliant free software from Google which sorts and edits your pictures without messing around with your originals. Highly recommended! You can download it from www.picasa.com.
- Install and run Picasa. It will want to make an index or database of all the pictures on your computer. You don't have to do that now, though - just open the folder on your computer with the pictures you want.
- Browse for the photos you want to put add an album.
- When you find a photo you want to include, select it. Click the Label
button (near the bottom left) and choose New Label from the pop-up menu. (At
this point New Label is the only item on the pop-up menu.) The “Name” and
“Description” will appear on the albums thumbnail page. “Name” will also
appear with each photo in the album.
- Browse for additional photos. As they are found; select them; click the
Label button and use your recently created label.
- When you’re done selecting photos, scroll to the top of the navigation
list (left of the thumbnails) and select the label you created for this
album.
- In the thumbnail display, drag the thumbnails into the order you want
them to appear on the web page. When you’re finished, double click on the
first image in the group.
- You’re now in edit view and the “Make a caption” field is already active
under the picture on the right - just start typing and press Enter when
finished.
- When the insertion point is not blinking (initially and after pressing
Enter), you can use the right/left arrow keys to navigate to the
next/previous photo. Again just start typing to add/edit captions.
- Finished captioning the photos? Click the “Back to Library” button
(upper left) and make the following two menu selections. Edit> Clear
Selection Ctrl+D Label> Export as Web Page… Ctrl+W
- Look for the exported web page in your computer at My Documents\Picasa
Web Exports.
- Burn the album to a CD and give it to one of the
committee members. We'll put your
creations up on the site, with your comments.
The above guide on using Picasa to add captions to photos was adapted from Bob Dietz on http://www.edbott.com/weblog/archives/000541.html.
Other Software
If you want to reduce the size of all your photos at once (for emailing, say, or for making a web page), you can use Picasa, but another highly recommended piece of software is Irfan, a free image-editing and sorting program.
